By Searrah Herendeen

Athlete Spotlights highlight athletes that are competing for the first time, or are a returning competitor. We want to showcase the diverse sports community the Meijer State Games of Michigan has helped create and grown with. Today’s Athlete Spotlight features Reese Johnson, a previous State Games of America participant in figure skating!

About Reese:

Reese is a 10-year old figure skater. This fifth grader attends school at Negaunee Middle School. Reese lives with her parents, two sisters, and their dog in Negaunee, Michigan. This year her family has also opened their home to an exchange student from Finland. Outside of figure skating, she enjoys downhill skiing in the winter months. In the summer, Reese can be found playing soccer, swimming, and spending time at camp.

What was your experience like at the 2022 state games of america?

Last year Reese skated at the Ron Carlson Marquette International Open as part of the Meijer Winter State Games. She competed in two events and qualified for both of them! State Games of America was hosted last summer in Des Moines, Iowa. Reese explains that it was a long drive, but worth it. Reese was excited that, “ [She] got to see a lot of different levels of skaters - from all around the country.” Reese wasn’t the only one that qualified. Her sister and some of her friends did too. Reese received two medals during the State Games of America figure skating competition.

Any advice you would give to others that are thinking about competing in figure skating?

At ten years-old, it can be easy to say that it is never too late. However, Reese makes a good point when she says, “ If it is something you are passionate about, you should do it.” It can bring joy and happiness, while also giving yourself a sense of accomplishment.

A piece of advice that can be used at any age is, “Don’t be afraid to mess up or fall.” Reese herself has fallen during a figure skating competition. That hasn’t stopped her from getting up and finishing her routine.

how has figure skating impacted your life?

Doing things alone can be scary, but not impossible. A huge empty rink can make somebody feel small. Reese has gained courage and confidence from these challenging moments. Even if you don’t want to compete, figure skating can be done for fun. It is a great way to stay active without the pressure of competing.

What were you looking forward to the most during the competition?

Reese was mostly looking forward to the opening ceremony, cheering on her friends, and competing. The opening ceremony featured an athlete parade, honoring our veterans, special guest appearances, lighting of the torch, and a firework show. She is competing again at the Ron Carlson Marquette International Open again this year with the hope of winning a medal and moving onto State Games of America.

The Meijer State Games of Michigan is a multi-sport, Olympic-style event(s) that welcome athletes regardless of age or ability level. The Games embody the values of participation, sportsmanship and healthy living.
