Internships

Thank you for your interest in interning with the Meijer State Games of Michigan. The signature event of the West Michigan Sports Commission, the Meijer State Games of Michigan is a multi-sport Olympic-style event for athletes of all ages and ability levels. Interns will work closely alongside full-time staff members as we prepare for our Winter Games, Summer Games, and other events.

The Meijer State Games of Michigan offers paid and non-paid internships, based on hours, workload, and previous experience. Internships provide a great insight into event planning and execution. Selected interns have the opportunity to earn college credit and gain valuable experience toward their future careers.

Winter/Summer Internship

Positions available:

Hockey Manager (not currently open): The Hockey Manager will assist the Hockey Director in all aspects of the Hockey tournament including, but not limited to: registration, recruitment of players, organization of tryouts, updating of website, communication with players/parents, schedule and scoring, creation of athlete bags, etc. Interns must be able to attend weekend tryouts during May and, Summer Games event weekends in June, and the tournament in June.

Internship will run from January - June (start/end date will be dependent on intern). Download description.

Media / PR Coordinator (not currently open): Works to develop relationships with local and statewide media to increase awareness of the Meijer State Games of Michigan. Duties include (not limited to): writing and distributing news releases, coordinating news interviews, writing blogs, media guides, result coordination, assisting with event operations, etc.

Internship will run from February - June (start/end date will be dependent on intern).

Fieldwork hours are also available for students looking to volunteer to fulfill requirements of their major.


Winter Internships

Winter Games Event Operations Intern (position already filled): Managing event and equipment logistics for the Meijer State Games of Michigan. Duties include (not limited to): sports equipment organization/distribution, updating sports information on the website, assisting with registration, promoting Winter sports to athletes/groups/teams, results coordination, etc.

Hours: 15-20 hours M-F & work Winter Games weekends

Applicants: Open to all levels of degree-seeking college students (Students seeking internship credit preferred, but not required).

Fieldwork hours are also available for students looking to volunteer to fulfill the requirements of their major.


Summer Internships

Summer interns typically start at the beginning of May and work until the end of June or middle of July. Start/end time can be adjusted based on school schedule and internship requirements.

2024 Summer Interns

Interns must be able to work the main weekends of the Summer Games. Hours: 30-40 hours per week with weekend work during events.

Applicants: Open to all levels of degree-seeking college students (Students seeking internship credit preferred, but not required).

Available Positions:

Hockey Coordinators (not currently open): The Hockey Coordinator will assist the Hockey Director in all aspects of the Hockey tournament including, but not limited to: registration, recruitment of players, organization of tryouts, updating of website, communication with players/parents, schedule and scoring, creation of athlete bags, etc. Interns must be able to attend weekend tryouts during May. Interns who can start at the end of April are preferred.

Event Operations (not currently open): Assists with event logistics and operations for the Meijer State Games of Michigan. Duties include (not limited to):  athlete recruitment, volunteer recruitment, equipment/merchandise distribution, hotel coordination, updating event information on the website, assisting with registration, schedule creation, etc.

Video Intern (not currently open): Works to create interviews, event recaps, and promotional videos to promote the Meijer State Games of Michigan. Duties include (but are not limited to): creating short videos to promote events, filming/editing interviews, doing Facebook live-streams of major events (Opening Ceremony and sports events), etc.  

Graphic Design Intern (not currently open): The graphic design intern will focus mainly on digital design for the web & social media. An interest in photography and/or communications is a bonus. Applicant needs to be skilled in Adobe Creative Suite with an emphasis on Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator.

Deadlines

Internship Time Frame and Application Deadline:

Winter (January - May): The application will open October 21. Deadline is November 15 (or until filled).
Summer (May - August): Deadline is March 14 (or until filled).
