Physical activity and the body

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state that the main ways that physical activity impacts the body are…

Weight Management:

Obesity is a common problem in the United States and around the world. Children are becoming overweight at young ages. Obesity can cause high blood pressure, diabetes, and forms of disability. Keeping physically active will help you maintain or lose weight. The CDC recommends 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity to maintain the same weight. The minutes of exercise should be increased with a change in diet to lose weight.

Reduced Risk of Disease:

In the United States, the two leading causes of death, according to the CDC, are heart disease and stroke. Some cancer risks, such as bladder, breast, colon, kidney, and lung, can be reduced with physical activity. The risk of disease is also reduced by the boost your immune system gets while being active. Laura Birkel, a Gunderson nutrition therapist, explains that the movement of white blood cells that carry immune cells is promoted during exercise. The effect of this movement can still be seen three hours after the workout.

Strengthen bones and muscles:

Using weights and focusing on strength workouts will keep your bones, muscles, and joints strong. Maintaining muscle mass will help individuals as they age. Staying strong lowers the risk of falls. It can also reduce the risk of injury if a fall occurs. Being physically active while aging can reduce the effects of arthritis.

Better Mobility and Flexibility:

Mobility and flexibility are two different things, according to Beacon Physical Therapy. Stretching should be done after working out and engaging in physical activity. The flexibility of your body's muscles is dependent on stretching. It helps lengthen and relax those muscles while also reducing tension. Mobility is your ability to move in different ways without getting ‘stuck’. For instance, flexibility is being able to touch your toes. Mobility is being able to swing your arm in a complete circle without having discomfort in your shoulder.
