Drew Miller named Honorary Hockey Chairman for 2021 Meijer State Games of Michigan
Meijer State Games of Michigan is proud to introduce Michigan native and former Detroit Red Wing Drew Miller as the Honorary Hockey Chairman for the 2021 tournament. “It is an exciting time for kids to be signing up. I hope they are able to come and enjoy this really cool and unique moment,” said Miller. Regional tryouts are open for registration on the Meijer State Games of Michigan website and will take place in May. The tournament is set to take place June 24-27. Regarding the event, Miller said he “always looked forward to doing the big events and big tournaments like this and that win or lose you are building a lot of great memories.”
Miller has an accomplished pro hockey career which spanned from 2006-2018 and included playing with the Anaheim Ducks, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Detroit Red Wings. He won the 2007 Stanley Cup with the Anaheim Ducks defeating the Ottawa Senators in five games. The Detroit Red Wings claimed Miller in 2009 off waivers and he remained with the Red Wings until 2017. He has many family members who played hockey including a brother, Ryan, who has been in the NHL since 2002. Miller was the 10th member of his family to play hockey at Michigan State University.
During his college and pro careers, Miller led by example by being involved with the community he grew up in. At Michigan State, he created the Spartan Buddies program. This program allowed men’s and women’s student athletes to visit Sparrow Hospital and brighten up the day of children diagnosed with various illnesses. Miller continued to visit local hospitals with the Detroit Red Wings throughout his pro career. Ultimately, giving back has remained a key component of the person Miller has continued to be.
Being a vocal leader but also leading by example are important leadership traits for Miller. For Miller, the type of leadership role he would follow would depend on the team. To maintain a high level of play in the NHL for an extended amount of time is difficult. Miller knew he had to work hard every day as there is always someone trying to get their opportunity on the ice. Being appreciative of the game and having fun was something Miller always reminded himself to do during his NHL journey. These small reminders made “going to war” more enjoyable for the former left winger.
Although he had a successful professional hockey career, Miller knew at some point it was going to end. He wanted to be known as more than just “Drew Miller, the hockey player.” Shortly after retiring, Miller decided to find another challenge in the business world. Miller currently works as an agent for KIG Insurance. Being able to spend more time with his family and continue to do work that has a positive impact just shows the drive Miller has to be great.
