GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- The count was 3-2 and Scott Vander Beek of the Log Cabin team was up to bat. As the ball arced through the air, Vander Beek wheeled back and let loose a smashing blow on the chartreuse softball. It traveled just 3 feet and dug into the knee-deep snow. With the temperature at 21 degrees and the windchill at 14, the inaugural Meijer State Games of Michigan Winter Games played through chilly air but hot competition Saturday and Sunday. Reese Bowden watched as members of the Cannonsburg ski patrol descended the face of the facility's main hill with flared torches and David Johnson, the patrol director, lit a ceremonial cauldron. The Friday scene at the opening ceremony of the inaugural Meijer Winter State Games of Michigan cued fireworks and set free the anticipation of athletes from across the state who have converged on West Michigan on Friday to participate in the 12-sport amateur competition. The Meijer State Games of Michigan Winter Games inaugural opening ceremony is Friday night. The Winter Games will take place Friday to Sunday around the Grand Rapids metro area. It is a multi-sport, Olympic-style event that welcomes athletes regardless of age or ability. Athletes will compete for gold, silver, and bronze medals. The sports lineup includes indoor archery, basketball, indoor BMX, bowling, Fatbike, hockey, racquetball, indoor rowing, ski/snowboard, snowball softball, snowshoe/trail run, speedskating, and wrestling. GRAND RAPIDS, MI – The only winter games we’ve had in West Michigan have been sidewalk shoveling, car pushing and salt throwing, so the Meijer State Winter Games of Michigan already sounds more fun. Organizers say it will be. GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- Bicycle motocross racing is a pedal-driven sport that's fast and fan-friendly, and it's become a family affair for the Salisburys of Cedar Springs. Charlie and Tracy Salisbury were drawn to the sport by friends when their oldest son, Noah, was 7, and they have been pursuing for four years. Along the way Noah, 11, has helped bring his younger sisters, Abbey, 9 and Marley, 6, in to the sport.
