The Meijer State Games of Michigan has added two new sports to the Summer Games lineup including pinball and weightlifting. The 2016 Summer Games will also include three new divisions: flag football, 16U boy’s hockey, and beach wrestling. This year’s lineup will offer 42 sports with anticipation of hosting over 8,000 athletes.

Along with the new additions, the Meijer State Games of Michigan will return two sports to this year’s event. Soccer will return after not running in 2015, along with ultimate {Frisbee} that has not been hosted since 2013.

The new additions of flag football, 16U boy’s hockey, ultimate {Frisbee}, and weightlifting, are all scheduled to take place on the main weekend of the Summer Games, which is June 23-26. The beach wrestling event, which is in partnership with Beast of the Beach, will be the next new addition to be introduced with the tournament taking place on July 9.

Beast of the Beach director, Ken Meinhardt talked about partnering their event with the Summer Games lineup for the first time stating, “Partnering with the Meijer State Games of Michigan is a great opportunity for us. We look forward to increasing the popularity of beach wrestling in Michigan in anticipation of the State Games of America in 2017. Beach wrestling is a unique sport and the partnership with the Meijer State Games of Michigan will help us reach our goal of popularizing the sport of wrestling around the Midwest.”

The new addition of the pinball tournament will follow taking place on the weekend of July 21-23, while the returning soccer tournament will be on July 30-31.

CrossFit and table tennis will not be included in this 2016 sports lineup.
